Evening Prayer for March 19, 2020

Evening Prayer for the Feast of St. Joseph

Check out the livestream at 5:00 p.m. at www.FaceBook.com/StMattSav.

Want to pray on your own? Visit prayer.forwardmovement.org for many varieties of Daily Prayer in the Episcopal tradition.

Note: We are praying using Rite I (traditional, Elizabethan, "Ye Olde English") language during the season of Lent. This change is to help us slow down and pay attention to the words we are praying and also to experience different forms of the Confession of Sin. We will return to our typical Rite II (contemporary English) language on Easter.

Confession of Sin

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of ourown hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults, restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Almighty and merciful Lord grant us absolution and remission of all our sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

V: O God, make speed to save us. R: O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, * and will be forever. Amen.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!

Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing thy praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds.

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed

Psalm 98 Cantate Domino

1   Sing to the LORD a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. 2   With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. 3   The LORD has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4   He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5   Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6   Sing to the LORD with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. 7   With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the LORD. 8   Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. 9   Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, when he comes to judge the earth. 10   In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 99 Dominus regnavit

1   The LORD is King; let the people tremble; * he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake. 2   The LORD is great in Zion; * he is high above all peoples. 3   Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome; * he is the Holy One. 4   O mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; * you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5   Proclaim the greatness of the LORD our God and fall down before his footstool; * he is the Holy One. 6   Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, * they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. 7   He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; * they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them. 8   O LORD our God, you answered them indeed; * you were a God who forgave them, yet punished them for their evil deeds. 9   Proclaim the greatness of the LORD our God and worship him upon his holy hill; * for the LORD our God is the Holy One.

Psalm 100 Jubilate Deo

1   Be joyful in the LORD, all you lands; * serve the LORD with gladness and come before his presence with a song. 2   Know this: The LORD himself is God; * he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. 3   Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; * give thanks to him and call upon his Name. 4   For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; * and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

Psalm 101 Misericordiam et judicium

1   I will sing of mercy and justice; * to you, O LORD, will I sing praises. 2   I will strive to follow a blameless course; oh, when will you come to me? * I will walk with sincerity of heart within my house. 3   I will set no worthless thing before my eyes; * I hate the doers of evil deeds; they shall not remain with me. 4   A crooked heart shall be far from me; * I will not know evil. 5   Those who in secret slander their neighbors I will destroy; * those who have a haughty look and a proud heart I cannot abide. 6   My eyes are upon the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me, * and only those who lead a blameless life shall be my servants. 7   Those who act deceitfully shall not dwell in my house, * and those who tell lies shall not continue in my sight. 8   I will soon destroy all the wicked in the land, * that I may root out all evildoers from the city of the LORD.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, * and will be forever. Amen.

The Lessons

A reading from 2 Chronicles (6:12-17)

Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands. Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the court; and he stood on it. Then he knelt on his knees in the presence of the whole assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven. He said, "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant in steadfast love with your servants who walk before you with all their heart-- you who have kept for your servant, my father David, what you promised to him. Indeed, you promised with your mouth and this day have fulfilled with your hand. Therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant, my father David, that which you promised him, saying, 'There shall never fail you a successor before me to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your children keep to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.' Therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you promised to your servant David.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Song of Mary Magnificat Luke 1:46-55

My soul doth magnify the Lord, * and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded * the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth * all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, * and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him * throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; * he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, * and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, * as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, * and will be forever. Amen.

A Reading from Ephesians (3:14-21)

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Song of Simeon Nunc Dimittis

Luke 2:29-32

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, *

according to thy word;

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, *

which thou hast prepared before the face of all people,

To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, *

And to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, * and will be forever. Amen.

A Reading from [["non-biblical Christian literature" to be determined (BCP, p. 142)]]

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers

V: The Lord be with you. R: And with thy spirit. Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: St. Joseph (March 19)

O God, who from the family of thy servant David dist raise up Joseph to be the guardian of thy incarnate Son and the spouse of his virgin mother: Give us grace to imitate his uprightness of life and his obedience to thy commands; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: Third Sunday in Lent

Almighty God, who seest that we have no power of ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Collect of the Day: Thursday in the Third Week in Lent

Keep watch over thy Church, O Lord, with thine unfailing love; and, seeing that it is grounded in human weakness and cannot maintain itself without thine aid, protect it from all danger, and keep it in the way of salvation; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect for the Presence of Christ

Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know thee as thou art revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of thy love. Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship thee, all nations obey thee, all tongues confess and bless thee, and men and women everywhere love thee and serve thee in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Offer your own intercessions and thanksgivings...

The General Thanksgiving

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication unto thee, and hast promised through thy well beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14
